Confused about vacuum pump

Sorry if I sound ignorant, but my cars 'lifters' are noisy, or so I
thought. I've read all the posts about this noise being the vacuum pump,
so I figured I would check it out.  I have a Haynes manual at home( not
to great) and all I can find that describes a vacuum pump is the 1)
auxilliary air device and 2) the vacuum brake assist. Where is the
vacuum pump??? I know it sounds stupid but I just cant find it.
