<< Just for interest the Reason(s) I make / Made these assumptions is that
I have may friends with Turbo Cars (Fords, Saabs etc) and all without
exception have encountered Turbo problems at about 50K miles or so and
all these vehicles have had Garret Turbo's yet all my Friends etc with
Turbo charged Audis have not started to have any Turbo problems until at
least the 90 > 100k Mile Mark. Hence QED ! >>
Hmmmm.... How many of them have external oil coolers? How many have the
water cooled turbo bearing? Aftrerun coolant pump? A properly maintained
and driven turbo should last in excess of 100k, regardless of make.... That
is my point... My brother sold his 89 ford probe t with 160k on the clock
and no turbo rebuild, I my "other" 85 GLH turbo in solo II and it was at 100k
(and tweeked since new) with no rebuild eiher.... I think what is happening
is that audi ASSUMED that you wouldn't properly care for the turbo, so they
added some unique (and expensive) equipment to do everything but care for it
for you... The afterun feature of the water housing is prolly the best
feature audi could have added.... Having torn down my fair share of turbos,
I assure you that the kkk advantage over the garrett is ONLY the beefyness of
the medal, the working components are basically the same.... The seals on
the garrett are exposed to more intense heat cycles and they tend to get more
heat soaked than a kkk, but again, proper care is really all that is
needed..... Anyone who owns a turbo car should be aware of the importance of
putt-putting the car for the last 5 minutes of driving, or at least lettting
the car idle for a coupla minutes before shutdown.... That is the key....
The garretts especially tend to glow (but so do kkk's, look at it some nite)
sooner becuz of the medal.... I have seen lots of audis past 150k with
the original turbo, just as much as garretts past 150k with the original, the
common denomiator is usually the anal oil changes and proper cooldown
procedures.... I don't wave either flag, to me a turbo is a turbo, the
production demands of auto manufacturers hardly is the reason to have one
over t'other.... Is it faster spooling? Is it more efficient over a large
Map area? Does it blow colder air? These would be the questions to ask in
determining a turbo app.... Lots of tweeked turbos on audis that are
garretts... Hmmm... Something to ponder....
I understand why you posted what you did, just btdt too many times to accept
it as a generalization....
