Martin, your plan won't work.  Take the whole shabang, car and all to the
dealer.  Your radio got into the safe mode in the first place because you
disconnected the battery. I'm not sure if you can buy the tolls needed to
take the radio out.  I made a crude representation of the tools out of
large gauge orthodontic wire.  If you want the details lemme know.
