Stonegard report back

I bought the Stonegard package for my 92 100/A6 although the only kit they
listed on their web site was for the S6. I assumed the two would be the same
and ordered the S6 version and the headlight protectors. The instructions were
somewhat vague so I discussed the fitment with a detail shop and a friend who
does tinted glass applications. The former would not touch it while the latter
suggested that he could fit it for a nominal sum as a trial to see if he wanted
to get a dealership for the product.

Well, to start with we had temp problems as you must have the car body and air
temp over 40 deg. We did this by leaving the car in his shop for 4 hrs and over
night after the fitment. Secondly the water and alcohol mixture they suggested
as a application fluid does not allow one to accurately place the big main
section. He has a trick he uses for tinted glass: water and baby shampoo,
although the instructions prohibit detergent. This worked well.

We found that the main sections was not cut accurately, so we cut pieces off
and fitted them as separate units. Not great but looks ok. The headlamp units
are much thicker and were not a perfect fit either but gave almost complete
coverage.

It has been on a week now, and I have been careful not to let the car get too
cold. Accordingly, there has been no lifting, and the plastic skin is almost
invisible. I did not fit the full kit as firstly it was difficult to figure out
where to put some of the pieces, and also I am not driving on gravel roads.
But as a protection from the winter mix of gravel and salt, I think this is a
much better solution than bras, 6 month detailing and touching up with those
dumb paint bottles...IMO.

I still have to fit the door handle inserts, they are the most difficult
peices.
