foggy fog laws

The law in the UK is that they may _only_ be used in fog, although it seems to 
take some people a day or two after each foggy period to switch them off.  It's 
up to you whether you use low beams as well, but my view is that if you're not 
blinded by a white wall when you turn the lows on, it's not foggy enough to 
merit the fog lamps being on at all.  The rear fog can be switched separately, 
but has to illuminate a warning light when in use.  On all my Audis, the rear 
fog light switch has been mechanically interlocked with the front fog switch.
 
I believe some countries in Europe (Holland?) ban the use of twin rear fogs 
because they obscure the jump in luminance that results from the brake lights 
coming on.
 
In the UK, front and rear fogs are explicitly banned in rain - which doesn't 
stop some people thinking that's what they were specifically designed for.
