Re: cheap turbo mods keeping the pump on at 1.6 bar
Steve,

Obviously, I've been misunderstood again. I know I need to get a beefier
wastegate spring. I know the spring will give me more hp. I know how much more.
The damn problem is keeping the fuel on at over 1.6 bar. Any suggestions?
Thanks guys......Steve

The first words I would have is, be careful out there. You have a 2nd? generation
5000 turbo and it has the KV( or is that KX) engine installed. Diggin' up the
specs on this engine we see that it is a 2.144 L engine with 8.3:1 compression
ratio and it's maximum boost setting is at 1.4 bar@4000rpm. This is quite different
than the 86-89 MC engine which has 2.2 L with 7.8:1 compression and runs at
1.42 bar@4000rpm. I am not real sure how your engine is configured, but think
it has (please correct if I'm wrong) the 2 oil filters, the turbo bearing housing isn't
water cooled, not sure about knock sensor, or boost control mechanisms and I
think it has the MAC07 ECU.
Your engine compression ratio is close to the 89-91 MC engine which has 2
knock sensors and a 8.4:1 CR. Even by Neds own admission, the 8.4:1 is
harder to pump up safely with more boost, given the increase in CR. I believe
he limits his mods to stage 1 only on these cars.
Before you go and blindly try to elminate the FP cutout, I would sit back and
really think about how this will effect your engine and calculate the level of a
reasonable maximum boost pressure. And if your car has an AT, the allowable
boost profile is different yet. I believe history shows that the AT is not the
strongest link in the turbo cars drivetrain, so a second be careful is applied.
