engine knock !!

Hi everyone,
Recently I seem to be getting engine knock on my '90 90q20v.
I happens only once in a while, especially when the engine is cold.
Is this normal ?
Shouldn't the anti-knock sensor take care of this problem ?
I normally put in 87 oct gas, once in a while 91 oct gas.
I understand the relationship between octane level and knock. Unless
the octane is way out, the anti-knock (knock) senor should
automatically compensate for it.
Does the colder weather have anything to do with it ?
Any comments !
