Mine (self-installed) is also left of center.  I don't think the dealer
has a choice of where to put it -- the holes that accept the mounting
bracket are already put there by the factory.

I changed mine at 3750 mi, which just happened to be right before some
messages in this list claimed that it wasn't a good idea.  No ill effects
at 5200 mi now, but I wouldn't expect anything noticeable, and I doubt that
it's a critical issue.  If I were to do it again, I'd wait until 7500 mi.
