I cracked the windshield on my Caprice one cold winter, so be careful of
using the defroster on high heat and air flow if it's really cold out! Try
leaving the car running, with a cool or low warmth setting with the
windshield defroster. That way the heat from the engine will gradually move
through the body, helping you defrost ice on the hood, which will allow you
to lift the ice (if it's thick), which now has melted a bit from the low air
temperature circulation from the defroster...it just takes some time, but
better to be careful!
BTW, I just saw an advert for Prestone Deicer - a spray concoction, probably
with alcohol...has anyone used it, and could it be dangerous for the paint??
