Pentosin volcano!
Great green gobs of boiling, seething Pentosin!
OK, went and saw Heinz at local furrin car parts joint, and got a rebuild
kit for 5000S hydraulic pump from him for $22.00. Part numbers on pump kit
wrong - 026 198 049, which according to the book is the right kit, contains
only the six O rings between the front and rear castings, plus a front oil
seal and one large O ring also between casting halves. Back to parts bin for
026 198 049B, which contains all of the above, plus eight O rings for under
plunger caps and two small O rings for under one-way valves at front of
pump. Still missing one more large O ring between back half of case and
under pump shaft rear bearing.
BTW - 026 198 049B is for a Vanagon! These are ZF parts, their number is
8601 633 008, and the bag also says Manufacturer Number is 617 800 070.
Took my spare pump all apart, no special problems. Found where all the
various O rings go, nothing scored or damaged, ready to clean it all up and
start putting it back together. (After Heinz gives me one more O ring.)
Need: Torque settings for two long allen bolts which hold the case halves
together, and need to identify if pump shaft rear bearing contains a check
valve, and how to test it. Once the case halves are apart, if you look into
the rear half, there is a large boss with a 5MM allen socket down inside it.
Unscrewing this brings the boss out - it looks like a flanged bell - there's
an O ring under it (this is the one that's missing) - in the center, looking
from the back, there's a small hole with what LOOKS like it might be a
single steel ball bearing in it. It doesn't move, and I can't see the other
side to see if there's a spring there - I think it is simply a hole plug,
but would like confirmation of this.
Any other special tricks in re-assembling this pump? Looks fairly simple,
although there's no decent tool for R&R the plunger caps - just make 'em
tight - somehow. More to follow.
