Sounds like it's time to replace the rubber bushings that hold the
rear diff to the subframe. With the diffs locked and when slowing down or
turning the rear diff hits the subframe, causing the clunking sound. It's
because your forcing all the wheels to move at the same speed. It doesn't
happen when the diffs are unlocked.
There actually two sets of bushings: two mount the diff to the subframe
and two that mount the subframe to the car body. There's also a big one
at the rear that usually doesn't cause any problems.
My car was clunking badly when I first got it. I had the the diff and subframe
bushings replaced. It was about $30 for each bushing and about two hours
labor. it's nice and quiet now.
