I think you're wrong about not being imported; I believe they still are.

Drove one, found it to be an absolute bore with the wimp stick (shifted like
my father's 16 year old Electra).  Might be nice if Subaru ever got their
head
out of their a** and threw in a manual.  Can't say they are selling like
crazy
now, since they are discounted like crazy (approx. 20% under list here in 
Pittsburgh).
