Jeb, have you considered that a mouse or other rodent has crawled up into
your heater fan area? Then, after you turned on the fan the first time, the
poor fuzzball was pulverized, causing the fan to get a little loopy, and
therefore, loud?
Do you live in a rural area? Is the car in a garage or outside? 
I have personal experience in this area.
Let me know what happened.
