RE: Sir Erl Seal et. al.
The 3B engine will run with the oil filler cap and dipstick removed. I don't
see how a small leak from a seal will cause it to run as bad as Lorens says
his is. Lorens says he can hit WOT if he slowly applies the throttle, thereby
keeping boost at a minimum. It would seem his problem is likely to be boost
related and, as Peter pointed out, he may be hitting an inaccurate overboost.
The 3B will not go over 1.3 bar boost once an overboost is detected until the
ignition is turned off. The overboost feels very similiar to the over rev
limiter. If the ECU thought incorrectly that it had detected an overboost
condition, then the results would be very similiar to what Lorens is seeing.
If all the hoses check out good, then the problem could be the ECU itself, or
maybe a mass air flow sensor. A call to Ned might also bring about some
possibities to check.

In a message dated 96-11-22 18:17:35 EST, you write:
<< It sounds like too much air getting through the camshaft and crankshaft
oil
seals.
The excess air causes the mixture to be set rich to compensate - when the
WOT
switch enriches the mixture, it gets far TOO rich and the engine stumbles.
a) Is the CO setting erratic?
b) What colour are the plugs?

My observations are that when C & C seals are going phil, oil on the outside
of the motor are readily apparent.... I've seen this post from you a few
times, so I'm sure you have your source for this, but remember, the later
cars use a different composition of seal than the earlier cars... The idle
stabilation circuit 86> (US)can compensate for a leaking valve cover gasket,
which has exponentially more surface area under the same vacuum as the two
seals you speak of..... Camshaft seal leakage is easy to detect, crank
isn't, but oil on the front of the motor is a good clue.... The vacuum in
the pcv isn't that excessive, and that goes default to atmosphere when the
engine is off, creating a big wet hint.... If it is sucking air, it is
leaking enough to cause serious oil presence when car is shut off...
