Considering all the fist-shaking over big government in our lives, it is ironic to note 
that the fairly recent emphasis on automobile safety in the US (including the ongoing 
air-bag flap) has been driven less by Joan Claybrook, Ralph Nader or US Transportation 
Secretary Pena as by the public.  Whatever it is we've done, for better and occasionally 
for worse, we've done it to ourselves.
