Offset
On a pure automotive note this time:
In the December european car (which I got _yesterday_ BTW) there is a very good
section on wheels.
Here, the adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" really holds true. There
are some good drawings of what "positive" and "negative" offset are.
Positive offset means the mounting face of the wheel (the part that bolts to the
hub) is outboard of the center of the wheel.
Negative offset means the mounting face is inboard of the center of the wheel.
"A higher (positive) offset moves the wheel towards the center of the car,
while a lower offset moves the wheel out. A 35mm offset might rub the fender
(outside of the tire) while a 38mm offset would clear it, for example"
