Re: Fog Lamps... low beams? very ,very, long but informative!
Pablo,
The fogs are only for fog condition! they will not do you any good without
fog (due to beam pattern). The fogs are mounted under the bumper behind the
plastic grill, they are the ball type (very popular now) you barley can see
them!!!! it is a little trick to do it, but not too bad. You have to avoid
the alternator cooling scoop and the intercooler scoop, you also have to
cut some of the louvers on the lower scoop (no big deal you can cut them
with a knife). The above setup is maybe a bit complex (not too bad) but if
you want to take an easier route (for fogs only) mount a set of Hella 550
under the bumper (above the bumper diminish the performance of the fogs
substantially) kind of, to the right and the left of the license plate (do
not abstract any scoops) I also recommend a set of light guards, they come
as OEM on some BMW, without them you will loose your fogs in no time.
All the above spiel was for the fogs only!!!! as for driving lights (for us
Q owners to supplement the poor low beams). Mount any set of driving lights
(I used Pia, round ones, are more efficient) on the bumper, to the inside
of the headlights.
When you mount the driving lights I strongly recommend to add two L shaped
supports to each side (of each light), connect the support to the screws
that open the light (to replace the bulb) by adding the two L support to
each side of the light you will form a tri-pot (the other end of the Ls
connect to the bumper) which is extremely strong and far superior to the
single center mount which tend to move your light with "every whiff of
wind". To align your driving lights find some wall (in the dark ofcourse)
and aim your driving lights in a way that they will fill the empty (read
dark) spots of your low beams, MAKE SURE that the hight of your driving
lights does not exceed the hight of your low beams!!!!
As for alignment of your fogs look for a fogy night and align your lights.
If I missed something let me know and I will add it. I am extremely
satisfied about my set up (considering adding another set of round Pia to
supplement the high beams). I am quite sure that my light performance
exceeds the Eurolights that everybody loves so much at a lesser cost.
I also do not get flashed by anybody despite the fact that I drive in the
city with 4 lights on.
Please let me know if I missed something or have not been clear enough.
