It's possible to fit an 8x17 wheel with a 215/45-17 under the rear fenders
of an '89 200q without touching the bodywork and running OEM alignment. I
know, because I've done it ... the trick is getting the offset right. Now
I'm seriously thinking about flaring the fenders to get those 245/40-17s I
was given to fit without rubbing but I'm not sure I want to do anything so
obvious, especially since I cringe every time I see a Treser-modified 5000
on the road, what with it's hokey-looking fender flares and all. BTW, the
Treser 4kq is actually pretty decent looking ... there's a red one in town
that is up for sale every now and again (the owners think it is or will be
collectible so they're always asking silly money for it -- last time, they
wanted $6k despite the fact both the front & rear bumpers needed some work
to repair the cracks and the car could use a fresh coat of paint.) When it
comes around again, I'll try to grab a photo of it for the curious...
