synthetic motor oil bad???????

Over the holiday break, i was talking to my friend about cars and he told
me that it is ok to put synthetic in the tranny but not to use it in the
engine.  Well i am currently running Mobil 1 15w-50, and i told him that.
He says that synthetics cause a lot more friction in cold starts than a
conventional iol because of their lack of ability to absorb moisture.  He
says that conventionals do absorb moisture.  I dont think that i believe
him, but i thought that i would get a few more opinions.  As far as i know,
a covalent bond and a polar bond dont mix, whether they are naturally
occuring or one is synthetic....hmmm.
