If the door switches check out OK (they might be rusted or
sticking) and the light doesn't work right in the "always on"
position, take it out and clean up the terminals and connectors.
I'm pretty sure there is a ground wire there too, make sure it
is grounding properly (check for continuity between the wire and
the body of the car) and if not, check the wiring that goes 
through the driver's door into the car.
