Sir :

You might want to check for a small leak from the hoses which carry the fluid
to the wiper/jet nozzles which spray on windscreen. A small leak will leak
fluid and give that smelly air to the car's interior.

The leaks usually aren't serious just loose fittings between pipes which can
be fixed your hands. This smelly situation has occurred on my 90 before. 

Go ahead and use the wiper fluid solution which suits you best.....just avoid
the cheaper soapy solutions which can leave residue in the jets and
eventually case a buildup which can promote clogging.
