Hi Mike,
Maybe only a lead...
On my '89 100E, there is a small lever on the back of the lock 
cylinder. This lever is made out of extruded aluminum and is a part 
that breaks easily. So easily that Audi has had it remanufactured 
in steel. Of course you have to change cylinder to fit the new 
part. Cost is (parts only) about $15.00.
Maybe it is the same on your car.
