Electro-rheological fluids, presuming that I've spelled that correctly.  Such
things exist in laboratory settings. And yes, applications would include
shock absorbers, engine mounts, clutches, brakes ...

However, the energy component is high and most of the fluids I've seen are
too abrasive for long term use in high duty cycle applications.
