Not exactly true.

Three years ago, my drinking club headed north from Vermont to Montreal.
I was driving my trusty 100Q, with radar detector. We took it out and locked
it in the trunk because I wasn't sure if they were legal in Quebec.

When we got to the border I told the officer "I have a radar detector
locked in the trunk. Is this a problem?" He said not as long as it stays
in the trunk. Just don't have it "handy" in the driver compartment.
