oil filters

There are filters and filters - some are _much_ better than others.
 
Personally, I think the "turbo" designation is misleading where it refers (as 
it does, e.g., between the WR and MB ur-quattros) simply to the presence of an 
anti-drainback valve.  The issue is whether you have hydraulic lifters or not - 
in a 1986 car, I suspect not.  In that case, it doesn't matter in the slightest 
whether you have the anti-drainback "turbo" filter or not.
 
It's much more important to buy a good brand to start with.  A good aftermarket
filter from one of the specialist manufacturers is probably better than a VAG
"turbo" filter.
