I just completed repairing the exact same problem on my 86 5Kcstq, what you
probably have is a vacuum hose that gets kinked when you shut the trunk and
does not allow air to open or close the latch. Make sure everything is
working and you do not have any vacuum leaks anywhere. If you do not have
any leaks follow the vacuum hose from the trunk and see if you can find a
split or a kink.
