Re: A4 Quattro Extended Warranty
ENEY,
I think big question is what does it cover, and how much work/maintenance
do you do on your own? The items that have gone wrong with my '90 Coupe
Quattro as it went up to 100,000 miles were:
- Driver window mechanism (cable); I think that cost $300
- Front struts (replaced by self for ~$100)
- 2 sets of front brakes, 1 set rear brakes, 4 rotors (~$600, done by self)
- A/C recharge (~$50)
- 2 timing belts (several hundred $$; shop installed. This included a 2-day
troubleshooting when belt slipped two cogs because of wear)
- Pwr steering & alt belts (~$50 by self)
- Thermostat (~$40; self)
- Brake bleeding (approx. 4 times, about $15 per by self)
- Radio ($74 for rebuilt from Audi)
- Battery (~$85 at Sears)
- Starter motor (~$150 at dealer, as I remember)
- NUMEROUS switches due to nite lights dying ( disassemble and fix myself)
- Brake lights (~$5, self)
- Brake pressure accumulator (~$150, if I remember, installed by self)
- Tranny & rear differential oil change (I feel this should be a 50,000 mile
item;
mine at 80,000 looked like a cross between molasses & new england
clam chowder)
I am not including normal wear-and-tear items like tires, windshield wipers,
oil/filter changes, windshield washer fluid, etc.
Questions: How much of above are covered?
How much of maintenance/repairs do you do yourself? I do
much of above since :
a) I don't trust turkeys at many places
b) is hassle trying to leave off car & then pick it up
later
c) I enjoy doing it (well, usually!)
d) I like to know what went into car; if i buy parts I
know
the quality
What happens if tranny goes belly up?
Where do you have to go for repairs?
If you're out in East Podunk and car goes blooey, are you
covered?
How many miles do you drive a year? Will you reach 100,000
miles by 7 years? Do you keep cars that long?
Hope this helps!

In a message dated 96-12-31 17:41:59 EST, you write:
I just purchased a 1997 A4 quattro. I also purchased a GE 7yr/100,000 mile
extended warranty contract (100 deductible per component). I am however
having second thoughts as to whether I need the extended warranty. I came
accross your e-mail addresses via "quattro-country". I hope you guys don't
mind.
The warranty is going to cost me approximately $2500. I figure to keep the
car a while. So my question basically is... Is it worth the extra $2500?
Or
should I just stick to the standard 3yr/50,000 manufacturer's warranty.
Thank you for your time. Waiting for your response at your earliest
convenience because I may still be able to cancel the contract by the
weekend, Jan. 3, 1997.
Please write me at: eney@aol.com
THANK YOU so much.
