Intermittent temp gauge

I've recently noticed that my coolant temp gauge has been working
intermittently. Sometimes it just won't budge, and other times, it works
just fine. Once I noticed that while I was driving, it was working fine,
then it would "die", and slowly move to the cold postion, then move back to
normal, then back....

Any thoughts? The gauge itself appears to work fine (i.e. the needle moves
freely...). Could it be the temperature sending unit? If so, where is this
located on the V-6? What else could it be?

Hmm... my car is approaching it's first, historic 100k mark. Are the Audi
gods sending me a sign?

Naturally, any feedback is greatly appreciated.
