What is this by the gas tank? '85 GT

Ok,

Got a quick question while my car is up in the air.

I'm putting a new fuel filter on my '85 GT, and I noticed that there is
another object in the fuel line between the gas tank and the fuel pump.

It's ~2 1/2" long and ~2" in diameter.  It's made of translucent plastic
with a black cap on the end closest to the fuel pump.

It's got Audi/VW part # 811 201 511 D stamped on the side of it.

Is this some sort of pre-filter that I should renew?  Or a accumulator
that I should put back and ignore, or ??

I've changed my fuel filter 6 or 7 times now, but this is the first time
I've taken a close enough look at it to wonder.

Any help folks?
