as One of Ten Best For 1997 January 10, 1997, 3:35 PM EST
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ --Audi of America, Inc.
announced that its 1.8 liter turbo engine has been selected by the
editors of Ward's Auto World and Ward's Engine and Vehicle Technology
Update as one of its "Ten Best Engines" for 1997. This marks the first
time that an engine from Audi has been selected to receive this honor.
Ward's Auto World selects ten engines annually to receive this honor
with this year marking the third anniversary of these awards. Ward's
describes this honor by saying "For automakers, earning a spot on the
year's Ten Best Engines list is to be acknowledged with the elite -- a
technology achievement that's evolved into a kind of cult status."
To determine 1997's "Ten Best Engines," a team of six Ward's editors
tested and evaluated 32 different engines in a variety of different
models from U.S. and foreign manufacturers over three months. The
competitors ranged from four cylinders to 12 cylinders, powering an
assortment of cars, vans and sport utility vehicles.
Audi's engine couples five-valve technology (a first for a
volume-production passenger car engine), a turbocharger, an intercooler
and double overhead camshafts. This unique combination of elements makes
for an engine that delivers 150 horsepower at 5700 rpm and 155 lbs. ft.
of torque at 1750 rpm. Bill Visnic, the Technical Editor of Ward's Auto
World, describes the A4 1.8 T as "dynamically superb and decidedly
Germanic."
Audi's 1.8 liter turbo engine is one of two engine choices in its
best-selling A4 model. Sales of the Audi A4 1.8 T contributed to Audi of
America's best sales year in the U.S. since 1987. SOURCE Audi of
