RE:Broken Dimmer Switch

This also happened to my dad's old '86 5KCST. His "solution" was to bind the
hi-beam/turnsignal switch to the regular headlight switch with rubber bands.
It wasn't pretty, but it worked (except when he needed high beams). Of
course this switch must be a platinum-plated, signed-and-numbered
commemorative switch from Audi's Franklin Mint Division, because it costs so
much.

However, trolling the local junk yards, I have seen many 5Ks of '85-'87
vintage with intact highbeam switches. With a set of work clothes, some
tools, and a little patience, I would go and get one (or two).
Unfortunately, I think you have to remove the steering wheel before removing
the switch assembly. The last time I was in the junk yard, I didn't have a
ratchet and socket of the right size, or else I would have taken the two that
I found.

By the way, there are few things sadder than seeing a beautiful silver '86 5K
with no body damage, an intact interior, and no visually obvious engine
maladies being ripped asunder in a junk yard by parts-pickers. It did,
however, have four good door handles, which I bought for 20 bucks.

...."Parts is Parts", at least some of the time.

Best Wishes,
