I don't know about that ... I remember those old air shocks my Dad had on 
the '72 Impala ... he certainly could alter the attitude of the rear of the 
car by adding a few PSI.  I can't say with certainty because I've never 
tried depressurizzing one, but it sure seems to me that some of those 
pressurized shocks have a certain level of spring constant ... it may be 
insignificant relative to the k of the springs though ...
