Yes, the motor mounts go soft and allow the motor to rock side-to-side ... I
popped a few inner CV joints on the '81 4k I autocrossed back in '89 until I
finally figured out what was happening.

The other thing you might check, though, is the front snubber mount ... this
is supposed to prevent the motor from moving vertically and this seems to be
more likely than side-to-side based on the symptoms you listed ... you might
check the exhaust hangers as well since your exhaust system will bang on the
bottom of the car in response to drivetrain torque when it gets loose.
