It is not just the clearence that it needed.  The outback may be touted as
the Sport Utility Wagon, but it is not an SUV by any means.  Allthough it
may have more clearance than an explorer sport, it does not have the
protective undercarriage of that truck.  Its undercarriage is as vulnerable
to rocks and boulders as a Pinto's.  (slighjt exageration for point).

I know what you mean, it always strikes me as funny when i see someone
driving an SUV with a bumper sticker saying conserve gas or something.  But
also, these trucks do have their purpose.  They are not made to be used for
daily driving, that is what a car is for.  hese things are made to go
offroad into the back country and where there is too much snow or such on
the road.  That is why these things are on the road, not so that a 40 year
old woman can feel the power of being high above everyone else, or to make
a fashion statement.
