? on A4Q tire chains

Has anyone out there put tire chains/cables on an A4Q (2.8l w/ stock wheels
& tires)? I know the manual says 'no can do w/ stock tire config', but
other cars say that too (e.g., Saturn), and you still can fit something on.

So far, the best bet seems to be the Shur-Grip Z cables, but it looks like
it would be REAL close to some suspension/steering control pieces.

I am also thinking about going to a narrower set of snows in the winter (I
think they would end up being 195/65-15?). That might help provide a little
more clearance.

Anyone got any real experiences w/ this? If so, please email me directly
@jpretti@mariners.com (in addition to posting to the list).

thanks...

PS - To cut off the "you don't need them" flames, here's why I'm asking
about this:

I spend a LOT of time in the CA Sierra Nevada during ski season (basically a
weekend commuter from the Bay Area to Tahoe) and want to get chains because:

1. Its the law - all vehicles need to carry them during the winter months &
(more pertinent) rumor has it the CHP is going to start checking that 4
wheel drives have them.

2. Rumor also has it (actually, it was in a newspaper article), the CHP is
going to start using the R3 chain control level (ALL vehicles need chains)
more frequently, because of the popularity of 4WD (can you say SUVs w/
clueless drivers). I've only encountered R3 once since 1988!

So, I want to have an option other than turning around!!
