To eliminate voltage drop due to series resistance. The alternator is
closer, and the source of any voltage over 12.6

According to my circuit diagram it's only 8 GA, one each to the battery and
the fuse box. This wire has to run everything else on the car. The
alternator is also very convenient to the lights, and the stock harness
signal is right there for your relays.. Might as well eliminate all the
series resistance you can and lighten the current load on the existing
circuits while you're rewiring.
