... wish I could get my grubbies on the UK-spec fiche ... :)
It turns out that my car is an early "D" model and it does have the
fusebox under the dash. I think that most if not all US-spec D models
were under dash. Perhaps this tidbit means that the car was originally
Euro spec? Does it look like the fuse box is hacked in? Perhaps Dave
can tell us how easy it is to disguise the hack ... :)

Me too. There are some VIN # differences in change overs between
the US fiche, what the UK fiche states and what was actually built. For
instance, my 1983 US ur-q is D0072 and has the underdash(rabbit)
fusebox. I have seen 1983 US ur-q (D0606) with the under hood
fusebox and it was factory. I have also seen others with late D05XX VINs
with the underhood fusebox.

There are very few US/Canada spec models with the cables ... and fewer
that came stock with TORSENS ;-) The early '83 (D) US spec model came
with a push/pull diff lock switch that has two positions, IN => all
unlocked, OUT => center and rear locked. That said, it is very easy to
retrofit the 3 position switch on the early cars (DT), so it might have
been added later ...

THe 1984 4000(80/90) quattro had the 2 position switch which locked the
center and rear separately.

In the US this was a running fix in the "D" models ...

Again, my ur-q D0072 has the clamp type sway bar. Supposedly from
the US fiche, ur-qs D0545?( or thereabouts) went to the end links. But
I know Thompson Smiths x ur-q D0568, had clamp type sway bars. Along
with the 'older' wheel bearing sizes.
