John, I had a similar experience with my 86 5KTQ. The dealer said that
Audi specifies that you replace the entire prop shaft assembly. That is
why the $1000 cost. I talked to another dealer that was a little larger
than the dealer I usually went to. They told me that they had found a
bearing (sorry, don't happen to remember the part number) that would
work as a replacement. They had done this on both 4000 and 5000
quattros. I left the prop shaft with them and drove the car for a day in
front wheel drive while they replaced the bearing. They put the unit
back in and it worked great. Total cost of about $150. The dealer who
had the info on the bearing was: Valley Imports in Fargo, North Dakota.
