Hmm, as I'm going through this right now (in addition to another major
swap) I could probably post a few notes...
To elaborate on Pat's list, Engine management system needs to be swapped,
but it's probably easier to swap the entire wiring harness from the donor
car rather than make the all of the splices from one into the other.
When doing the wiring, watch the polarity of the tach... 4k is negative
gnd, 5kt is positive gnd. Mix this up and it costs a tach.
As far as tie-rods, only the right needs to be changed, but you need one
from an ur-q. The term hen's teeth comes to mind. Another option here is
a non-assist rack. Probably even cheaper than the ur-q tie-rod...
If you use an MC motor with it's air box and fuel distribution, be
prepared to cut out the inner fender well from the shock tower forward on
the rt. side of the car.
Intercooler needs to be addressed. Major PITA to get the 5kt one into the
4k engine bay with out surgery to the front of the car. ur-q cooler can
be used. Usually hard to find...
Have to use turbo motor mount on the rt. side.
ur-q down pipe not a necessity but a good idea for correct fitment.
Find a place for the factory oil cooler...
Brakes... THis issue has acouple of points. IMHO, the factory 4kq brakes
are not up to the task, but that aside you will lose the vaccum assist of
the non turbo car. Does it matter? that's the debate. Some say yes, some
say no, I say tilton comes to mind...
I could keep going longer than most would care to read...
Not to try to tell anyone that this swap is not worthwhile or impossible
to do, but I must say there are enough things that need to be addressed
that the idea shouldn't be taken lightly. Me thinks this is deffinatley
not for the shade-tree mechanic no matter how much support the list
gives...
Before I don the nomex, let me say "if the shoe fits..."
