Re: $5k insurance
Did you try quotes for a higher deductible? You can probably reduce your
premium significantly with, say, a $2k deductible for comp and collision. If it
reduces your premium by, say $1000 or more, then it's a risk definitely worth
taking, especially if you're confident of your driving abilities. If an
accident occurs and you're not at fault, the deductible wouldn't be a factor,
right? That is, unless the other party is uninsured, but those are details.
OK, say you do wreck the A4 and it's your fault, I'm sure you can negotiate the
deductible amount with any body shop, depending on the extent of the damages.
By negotiating, I've never had to pay a deductible in my experiences. Also,
shop EVERYWHERE. I got quotes ranging from $980 to $1800 for my A4, and I'm 26
living in the SF Bay Area. Of course, I went with the $980 quote (Liberty
Mutual w/ $1k deductible). I just got quoted $1100 for a 1997 M3 from them. If
you're really desperate, buy a hoopty for $500 and claim it as your primary car!
