4kq gearshift

I finally got my shift knob on my car without having any gaps. I will post
the procedure after my query. While the boot was off I noticed there was a
part under the shifter assembly. It is a long nut with a threaded shaft about
1/4" out of each end. One end had what looked like a vacuum hose about 1/2"
long and the other had a plastic hat shaped piece. This piece was just laying
there and could be anything but I thought that maybe someone would have an
idea what this is.

For those that have not seen the Momo knobs they have a collar that covers the
allen screws. The problem is that to get to the allen screws the boot gets in
the way. If you just cut the boot support down to give you clearance than you
have a gap. I cut the boot support down to about an inch. Then I put about a
1 1/2" spring so that it would hold the boot up to the bottom of the knob.
But the spring allows you to get the screws in without the gap. This also
effectively shortened the length of the shifter.
