alternator problem?

About a week ago, my 200T (nonQ) briefly flashed brake/battery idiot
lights. I assumed this was due to driving through a deep puddle and getting
the belts wet. Happened before...

*But*, tonight it happened again. My wife reports that last time she drove
the car (yesterday) it briefly did the same thing.

Now, I'm getting more of the idiot lights and a whine from the engine bay
with the lights. Doesn't sound like a belt slipping, and it's not constant.
Seems to cut in and out at will. Engine speed not relevant. Primary belt
seems tight and intact.

When the lights are on, the voltmeter dives to 12 and below...sure seems
like its not charging...or getting the charge where it belongs.

Battery is 1 YO Interstate.

Does this sound like a bad connection, bad alternator, or something else? I
remember reading something about an alternator diode...

I've already searched the archives and didn't find anything relevant.

Thoughts appreciated.
