I think it used to be part of Mobil's pitch that you
basically never had to change oil. They had to say
something to get the average Joe to part with all
those $$$. I knew one of these Joe types who
boasted he hadn't changed his Mobil 1 in 60,000 mi.
When he checked the oil level, you should have seen
the god-awful black tar clinging to the end of the dip
stick.
Point is, whether or not the polymers break down
(and you can be sure they do) the oil collects all
manner of corrosive combustion by-products over
time. Visualize never changing your bath water.
Common sense tells us that "eventually," this no-change
philosophy has got to be bad for both your engine and
your body.
I think it would be fair to say that most users of Mobil 1
and other top quality oils on this list pay the higher costs
in order to obtain the best possible product performance,
not to save themselves the trouble of changing the oil.
