Now this is even MORE interesting.  George doesn't say why
he needs to keep resetting his remote ... but I have had occasional
problems with mine also where the remote seems to stop working and
I have to use the key to open/lock the car.  Then the next time I try
it mysteriously works again!  I already have had one remote 
replaced by the dealer.  That one stopped working totally, even 
though when the dealer tried to re-train it, it DID seem to be 
acknowledged by the car during the 'training' process.  Unfortunately
it still wouldn't lock/unlock the doors afterward!  The replacement 
remote is the one that occasionally goes mute.

I wonder if this is some endemic problem with the remote locking?
(my car, again, is a '97 A4Q2.8).
