Can't address the filter question, but I suspect that leaving it on 
would not hurt anything.  As for losing the oil, you know the answer 
already - you removed the filter last weekend, and observed that no 
oil comes out except for what's in the filter...so you wouldn't lose any 
oil besides what's in the filter.  If you want, especially with a new 
oil change, you can pour that oil back into the engine.  If you're 
really feeling compulsive, spend $2 on cheesecloth and pour it 
through that.  Of course, then you've almost paid for another quart of 
oil, anyway...... 

I'd stick with the filter till the next change, then (all in chorus 
with me, now) install an Amsoil filter.  (You knew that was 
coming...)
