Agreed, I prefer downshifting, combined with a prior increase of engine
speed to match road speed, for most speed adjustment.  Braking is
(obviously?) best for big speed reductions, but I believe one has the
most desirable and subtle speed control, with the least influence on
other drivers by using the throttle/downshift to adjust speed.  In other
words, by avoiding brakelight use you don't cause a "monkey see, monkey
do" overreaction behind you.  "Ohmygod Martha, he's braking!"
