I think I can help both off you out here, I had the same problem on my '84 5KS
(un Q) and I got tired of it. I finally traced the problem out to a wire,
the blue (usually) small wire that comes off the alternator and runs to the 
dash lights. I ran a piece of wire from the connector to the dash light. 
now as soon as I start the engine, volts jump up and charge at an idle.
