The car still has the original fuel filter and I am thinking this may be
the problem? Any other thoughts on what's most likely causing this?

Chris-
Obviously an electrical problem. Check cap/rotor first for arcing. Then
check Spark plugs. By your description, though, it sounds like signal loss
-bad hall sending unit or possibly failing fuel pump relay. Same symptoms
happened with my V8Q once, but was able to drive it for 350 miles that way
-ended up being the Hall sending unit. Does your engine check light come on?
Should show up on V.A.G. Fault code computer, just don't shut off car when
you bring it in to dealer.
While the cars age might say 'yes' for the fuel filter change, by the mileage
(assuming it is correct- very low mileage for that car) I would say it
shouldn't be necessary.
