Airbag/hornpad loose

On my 91 200qw, when I hit certain bumps in the road, the airbag/hornpad
makes a single thump against the steering wheel. For the first few months I
had the car I thought I had something loose in the front end but have finally
isolated it to the airbag/hornpad, fortunately. Unfortunately I don't think
I can live with it without at least attempting to fix it once.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is a common problem with a specific fix?
:-} Or is it one of those off-the-wall idiosyncracies? :-(

My first reaction was to start messing with it myself, but with the airbag, I
thought I'd poll the list first. Can the hornpad be easily removed like on
non-airbag cars where the hornpad just pops off of it's 4 nice little pegs?
(Don't worry I'm not going to experiment with this...) I have thought about
wedgeing some firm pieces of foam between the hornpad and wheel at the joint
on each spoke but that seems kind of cheesy and may impair the operation of
the horn if not the airbag as well.

I'm hoping that if I shower the car with attention on lesser items like this
and a short in the rear window/rear view mirror defrost cirbuit it will
forget about flashing me the occasional brake warning light (would that be
the Audi Gods' version of the middle finger?) and I'll never have to replace
the bomb. :-)
What do you think?
