iltis

J, The Iltis appeared in 1978 and was the first vehicle to use the
hollow shaft gearbox thus eliminating the large x-fer case transmissions
always associated with 4-wheel drive. The Iltis system became the platform
for the Audi quattro drive system. The SOC I5 engine appeared in 1976
with 136hp. Before the Iltis Auto Union made the DKW Munga, three
cylinders and 40 hp 2stroke. It did NOT win any rally championships. At
this time the 4 ring mark was owned by Daimler-Benz AG.Trying to follow
the audi history, Auto Union,DKW,NSU,Benz is sort of like looking into a
bowl of alphabet soup that has been recently stirred.I realize this is
not need to know info.Just a little "color commentary".
